If you wish to record audio during your consultation, you will need to ensure that your microphone is enabled. If you’re seeing a warning in Virtual Practice that your microphone is not enabled, it means your browser is blocking audio input.

To enable microphone access, please follow the steps below based on the browser you are using. For best performance, make sure you’re using one of the recommended browsers.

Google Chrome (Windows or MacOS)

  • Click the settings icon in the address bar, located to the left of the Virtual Practice web app URL.
  • In the drop-down menu, find Microphone.
  • Click the drop-down next to ‘Microphone’ and select ‘Allow’.
  • Refresh the page to apply the changes.

If it’s still not working, configure the permissions by following the below steps.

  • Open Chrome Settings: Click the three-dot menu at the top-right corner of Chrome and select “Settings”.
  • Go to Privacy and Security: In the left-hand menu, click “Privacy and security”.
  • Click on Site Settings: Under Privacy and security, choose “Site Settings”.
  • Find Microphone Settings: Scroll to the Permissions section and click on “Microphone”.
  • Select the Correct Microphone: If you have multiple microphones, select the correct one from the drop-down.
  • Check Site Permissions: Under the “Not allowed to use your microphone” list, find the Virtual Practice site. Click on the site, and under Permissions, change Microphone access to “Allow”.
  • Refresh the Page: After updating the setting, refresh the Virtual Practice page and retry the recording.

Mozilla Firefox (Windows or MacOS)

  • Click the lock icon in the address bar, located to the left of the Virtual Practice web app URL.
  • In the pop-up, find the Microphone setting and set it to ‘Allow’.
  • Refresh the page to apply the changes.

If it’s still not working, configure the permissions alternatively through Firefox Preferences by following the below steps

  • Open Firefox Menu: Click the ☰ three-line menu icon in the top-right corner of Firefox.
  • Select “Settings”: From the drop-down, click on Settings.
  • Go to Privacy & Security: In the left sidebar, click Privacy & Security.
  • Find Permissions Section: Scroll down to the Permissions section.
  • Find “Microphone” and Click “Setting”: Next to Microphone, click the Settings… button.
  • Manage Site Permissions: In the list that appears, find the Virtual Practice site. Change its status from Blocked to Allow using the drop-down menu.
  • Confirm Changes: Click Save Changes at the bottom right of the popup window.
  • Refresh Virtual Practice Page: Go back to the Virtual Practice tab and refresh the page. Your microphone should now be enabled.

Microsoft Edge (Windows)

  • Click the lock icon located to the left of the Virtual Practice web app URL.
  • Under the Permissions for this site, find Microphone.
  • From the drop-down menu, select ‘Allow’.
  • Refresh the page to apply the changes.

If it’s still not working, configure the permissions alternatively through Edge Settings to Allow Microphone Access.

  • Open Edge Menu: Click the three-dot menu at the top-right corner of the browser.
  • Select “Settings”: In the left sidebar, go to “Privacy, search and services” and click Site permissions.
  • Choose All Permissions: Under Site permissions, click All Permissions and
  • Scroll to and Click “Microphone”: Under Site permissions, click on Microphone.
  • Check Site Permissions: Look for the Virtual Practice site in the Block list. If found, click the trash icon to remove it.
  • Refresh the Site: Return to the Virtual Practice and grant access when prompted. Refresh the page to start recording.

Safari (MacOS)

  • Open Safari Preferences: Click Safari in the top-left menu bar. Select Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions)
  • Go to the “Websites” Tab: In the settings window, click the Websites tab
  • Select “Microphone” in the Sidebar: On the left panel, scroll down and click Microphone
  • Find Virtual Practice in the List: Look for the Virtual Practice website in the list on the right. If it says Deny, change it to Allow:
  • Close the Settings Window:Your changes are saved automatically
  • Refresh the Virtual Practice Page: Return to the site and refresh the page to apply changes

  • Your microphone is connected and working properly.
  • Your operating system has granted permission to the browser for microphone access.
  • There are no other applications using the microphone simultaneously.
  • Ensure the microphone volume is not muted and is set to a high level (100% Recommended) before beginning the recording.
  • Try resetting the microphone permissions for the Virtual Practice through the Site Settings section of your browser.
